The site near Obermehler and Schlotheim was acquired by the state in 1955; in 1957 Soviet forces began building a garrison and a grass runway about 2,500 metres long. In the 1960s airborne and aviation units were based at the airfield, and from 1966 helicopter units; the garrison had housing, shops and a school for officers' families. The troops left in 1991; in the same year the municipality decided to turn the site into a business and residential area, and in 1997 a civil airfield with a new runway was opened.
