Neuruppin airfield was laid out in 1916, and from 1934 military pilots were trained there. After the Second World War it was taken over by the Red Army, and in 1948 the first fighter regiment was moved here; in the 1970s one of the hangars was converted into a camouflaged aircraft shelter. Neuruppin remained one of the largest garrisons of the Soviet forces in Germany; the last aviation units left the airfield in April 1991.
