The airfield at Merseburg was rebuilt as a military airfield in 1933–1935. In April 1945 it was occupied by US troops and in summer 1945 passed to the Soviet air forces; by 1952 a concrete runway had been built. According to the airfield's website it was one of the largest Soviet airfields in the GDR (560 ha). In early March 1991 the garrison held an open day and farewell ceremony, and the units were withdrawn that year; in 1992 part of the runway slabs were lifted and removed, and since that year civil flying has taken place on part of the site.
