The airfield near Cochstedt was built in 1957 as a Soviet air force base; the runway was lengthened in 1968. After German reunification and the withdrawal of Soviet forces it became a civil airfield, licensed in 1994 as Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport. After the operator's insolvency flying ceased for several years; the site was then acquired by the German Aerospace Center (DLR), which opened its National Experimental Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems here in 2021.
