After US units left in July 1945, the Köthen airfield was taken over by Soviet forces; from 1951 it was the base of the 73rd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, which flew aircraft from the MiG-15 to the MiG-29. Flying ended in 1991, and on 29 August 1991 the garrison was handed over to the German authorities, represented by the Federal Property Office in Halle. Part of the airfield was later used by a flying club, the main runway was removed and some barracks were taken over by the district administration.
