The airfield on the north-eastern edge of Fürstenwalde has existed since 1915 and was enlarged in the 1930s. On 20 April 1945 the site was taken over by Soviet forces; helicopters were based here in 1958–1962, and from the early 1960s the southern part with the concrete runway was used by ground units. The northern part was used from 1957 by sport aviation and by East German agricultural aviation. The troops left in 1994; the civil airfield closed in 2010, and in 2011 most of the flying field was covered by a solar park.
