Finsterwalde airfield, opened in 1935 as a German air force base, was taken over on 21 April 1945 by the Red Army, which used it together with the existing buildings. A fighter-bomber regiment was based here until it left on 22 March 1993; in May 1993 the site was handed over to the German authorities. In 1999 the airfield reopened for civil aviation, with a business park alongside.
