The airfield near Allstedt was built from 1955 for the air arm of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany and at first served as a reserve field; from 1967 aviation and later helicopter units were permanently based there. A housing estate for servicemen was built in 1966–1968. The units left in May 1991 and the site was handed over to the German authorities in July 1991; the housing estate was demolished from 1996, the runway was shortened to 1,200 metres, and since 1995 the airfield has been used as a civil landing ground.
