1944–1956Military sites
An area on the Porkkala peninsula west of Helsinki that Finland leased to the USSR for 50 years as a naval base under the 1944 armistice. An agreement on early termination of the lease was signed in September 1955, and the territory was returned to Finland on 26 January 1956. The fortifications were dismantled or blown up on withdrawal; local museums document the lease period.
