The Hanko peninsula and adjacent islands were leased to the USSR for 30 years as a naval base under the 1940 Moscow Peace Treaty. The lease lasted less than two years: after the fighting of summer and autumn 1941 the garrison was evacuated by sea, the last units leaving on 2 December 1941. The Hanko Front Museum covers this period.
