The flying field with barracks south-east of Vienna was built from 1940 for the German air force. After the Second World War the bomb-damaged complex was used by aviation units of the Soviet forces. After their withdrawal in 1955 the site was taken over by the Republic of Austria and in 1956 passed to the Austrian army; flying was not resumed, and in 1967 the barracks were named after Gunther Burstyn.
