The New Palace at the foot of the Schlossberg, completed in 1767, was sold to the treasury in 1852 and converted into a cadet institute, later serving as barracks. After the Second World War the barracks housed Soviet servicemen until the withdrawal of the troops in 1955. The main building was demolished in 1966, and from 1967 the ancillary buildings operated as the Marc Aurel Barracks; military use ended in 2006 and the site was sold.
