The flying field near Wiener Neustadt has existed since 1909; in 1914–1917 an aviation barracks was built on its edge. In 1945–1955 the surviving part of the airfield was used by Soviet troops, and from 1950 it was adapted for jet aircraft. In August 1955 the airfield was handed over to the Republic of Austria, and in 1961 it was taken over by the Austrian army.
