The Soviet legation opened in Canberra in 1943 and was raised to an embassy in 1945. The compound at 78 Canberra Avenue, Griffith, opposite the Kingston Hotel, served as the Soviet embassy until 1954, when diplomatic relations were broken off, and again after the diplomats returned in 1959. In December 2008 Russia was granted a 99-year lease of a site in Yarralumla for a new embassy, but the building was never completed.
The embassy continues to operate in Griffith; the Yarralumla lease was terminated by a 2023 act, which the High Court of Australia upheld on 12 November 2025 while finding Russia entitled to compensation.
