The station was opened on 1 April 1988 by the 33rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition in the Larsemann Hills oasis and was moved to its present site in February 1989. It is the last Antarctic station built by the Soviet Union. It later took over from Mirny the role of main supply base for Vostok Station.
