A nitrogen fertilizer plant with a capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes of urea a year and a 48 MW combined heat and power station were built in 1972–1974 at Dehdadi, west of Mazar-i-Sharif, with Soviet assistance; both run on natural gas from the northern fields. It was the first fertilizer plant in Afghanistan.
According to an Argumenty i Fakty report (May 2026), the fertilizer plant is operating, though at reduced output.
