The House of Soviet Science and Culture on Darulaman Road in western Kabul opened in 1982; in the 1980s it hosted lectures, film screenings and Russian-language classes. The building was wrecked during the fighting of the 1990s and stood in ruins for about twenty-five years. Following a competition, the St Petersburg bureau A.Len (led by Sergey Oreshkin) designed a new centre, and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture was built on the same plot.
