The Winter Theatre was built between 1934 and 1937 to a design by the architect Konstantin Chernopyatov as part of the transformation of Sochi into a model resort. Its facade is decorated with a Corinthian colonnade of 88 columns. Above the main entrance is a sculptural group of muses by Vera Mukhina.

Multiple Russian-language sources consistently cite approximately 11.5 million Soviet rubles as the total construction cost of the Winter Theatre, Sochi, built 1934–1937. One archival source (sochi.ru) gives a slightly more precise figure of 11 million 50 thousand rubles (11,050,000 руб.) for construction and equipment, while two independent editorial sources (timeout.ru and tripguide.guru) round to 11.5 million. The value of 11,500,000 is used as the most widely cited representative figure.
