The village (formerly Alexandrovsk, later English Bay) grew on the site of a Russian post established in 1784–1786; its first church was built about 1870. The present building took shape by about 1930 from two joined rectangular structures with an overall length of about 38 feet; an octagonal cupola with a cross stands on the roof. The church was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
