The Brotherhood of St. Michael the Archangel was founded on 24 October 1911 by members of St. John the Baptist parish in Conemaugh; in July 1915 Bishop Evdokim (Meschersky) granted the parish a charter of the Russian Orthodox Church. The congregation then bought three lots at the corner of Blair Street and Sonman Avenue, and contractor Ira F. Link built the church and parish house. The historic district nomination describes a one-and-a-half-storey yellow-brick building with a central square tower and dome; two small domes were removed in 1985. The Portage Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
