The seminary was founded in New York in 1938 and spent its first decades in borrowed and rented premises in Manhattan. In 1962, after a five-year search, it acquired a property in Crestwood, Westchester County, previously occupied by St. Eleanora's convalescent home run by the Sisters of Charity. The school is associated with the Orthodox Church in America; Fr. Alexander Schmemann was its dean from 1962 to 1983.
