The monastery was founded in the early 1940s by a small group of nuns who had come from Russia and China: with the blessing of the church authorities they bought a two-storey house on the bank of the Napa River. A separate wooden church modelled on the Fort Ross chapel was completed in 1959. The last nuns left in the early 1980s and the site served as a parish church; the buildings were restored from 1998, and on 22 October 2009 a community of sisters from Santa Paula moved in.
