The parish was organised by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew the First-Called in 1897 and is regarded as the oldest Orthodox parish in Philadelphia. In 1899 Russian officers and sailors arrived in the city, where the cruiser Varyag and the battleship Retvizan were being built at a local shipyard; according to the parish, in 1902 their donations paid for a lot with a building on 5th Street, which was converted into a church. A two-storey annex was added in 1959; the cathedral has a museum dedicated to the sailors of the Varyag. The cathedral belongs to the parishes of the Moscow Patriarchate in the USA.
