The building of Kentucky limestone was erected as the Olivet Memorial Church to a design by the architect Josiah Cleveland Cady; the cornerstone was laid in 1891. In 1943 it was purchased by the Orthodox community that has existed since 1926 as the Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral and now belongs to the Orthodox Church in America. The cathedral belongs to the Diocese of New York and New Jersey.
