The cathedral was built in 1844–1848 in Novo-Arkhangelsk, the capital of Russian America, to a concept by Bishop Innocent (Veniaminov). It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1962. The wooden building burned down on 2 January 1966; the icons and part of the furnishings were saved, and the cathedral was rebuilt in its original form in fire-resistant materials from 1961 measured drawings. It is the cathedral of the Diocese of Alaska of the Orthodox Church in America.
