The parish was founded by immigrants from Eastern Europe who worked in the coal mines of southern Illinois. Work on the foundation began on 14 October 1914, the feast of the Protection; the plans were taken from the Orthodox church in nearby Muddy, and Fr. Michael Vyacheslavov of St. Louis became the first priest. The building cost 2,200 dollars, paid in full by the parishioners, and the church opened in 1915. After the mine explosion of 27 October 1914, in which thirteen Orthodox miners died, the company gave the parish land for a cemetery.
