The parish was founded in 1907 within the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church in North America; its first administrator was Fr. Alexander Hotovitzky, appointed by Archbishop Platon (Rozhdestvensky). The building on Grand Street in the Paulus Hook district was dedicated in 1857 as the Free Reformed Dutch Church and was purchased by the Orthodox community in 1909, after which cupolas and an iconostasis were added. The cathedral belongs to the Diocese of New York and New Jersey of the Orthodox Church in America.
