The parish was founded in 1907 with the help of priests from St. Theodosius Cathedral in Cleveland and was the first Orthodox parish formally established in the state of Michigan. Until 1948 services were held in a wooden church; the present church on Gilbert Avenue was designed by the architects Aloys Frank Herman and Howard Thomas Simons and completed in 1949. In 2000 the church was raised to cathedral status; it belongs to the Diocese of the Midwest of the Orthodox Church in America.
