The agricultural colony of St. Helena was settled in 1923–1932 by about thirty families from Galicia. In 1932 the community called the priest John Boruch, who had previously served at SS. Peter and Paul's Church in Passaic; the brick church with an onion dome was begun in August 1932 and completed in 1933 on a tract donated by the colony's founder, Hugh MacRae. North Carolina highway historical marker D-121 stands at the church.
