The parish was founded in 1891 by Eastern European immigrants working in the steel mills and was the first Orthodox parish in Pittsburgh; its first church stood in the Woods Run district. In the late 1960s the site was taken over by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the community moved to the northern suburbs, where the new church was consecrated on 8 October 1972. In 1982 it was proclaimed the diocesan cathedral; it is now the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania of the Orthodox Church in America.
