In 1871 the Russian St Andrew Skete of Mount Athos bought a house near the steamship pier in Galata to accommodate pilgrims; after a fire in 1887 a multi-storey metochion with a chapel on the top floor was built on the site in 1888–1890. The metochion was requisitioned by the Turkish authorities at the end of 1929 and returned by a court ruling in 1934. The chapel walls were painted by the artist Nikolai Perov in 1928–1929.
