TurkeyСтамбул (Ешилькёй)1895–1898Monuments
A memorial church with a mausoleum built by the Russian Empire in 1895–1898 in the Constantinople suburb of San Stefano (now the Istanbul neighbourhood of Yeşilköy) on land allotted by the Ottoman authorities. The granite structure with a chapel and bell tower stood over a crypt holding the remains of about five thousand Russian soldiers who died in the war of 1877–1878. On 14 November 1914, after the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War, the monument was blown up; its demolition was filmed.
