The Russian community of the capital received permission to build in 1953, and the first stone was laid in October of that year. The single-domed church designed by the architect Mikhail Kozmin, reminiscent of the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, was consecrated on 10 June 1956 by Archbishop John (Maximovich). Icons and church plate from ships of the Russian Squadron were moved to it. In 1992 the community was received into the Moscow Patriarchate.
