The cave of St Chariton and the surrounding land on the site of the ancient Pharan Lavra in the Judaean Desert were bought in the early 20th century (in 1903 according to some accounts) by Russian monks from Mount Athos led by Hieroschemamonk Panteleimon, who re-established a skete there. The property later passed to the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem; the buildings were damaged by fires, most recently in 1948, and monastic life resumed in the 1970s. The skete is administered by the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
