A plot of about 2,000 square metres in Bethany was purchased in 1909 by Archimandrite Leonid (Sentsov), head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem; two two-storey stone buildings for pilgrims were erected on it before the First World War. A girls' school opened on the site in 1937 and a new school building was added in 1938. The school is run by the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
