A plot of about 1.5 hectares acquired by the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), to receive pilgrims travelling to the Jordan (publications give both 1867 and 1874); the ground floor of the pilgrims' house was completed in 1874. Excavations in 1891 uncovered the remains of a Byzantine church and a 6th-century mosaic on the plot. After 1917 the podvorie was administered by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia; on 15 January 2000, by decision of the head of the Palestinian National Authority, the plot was transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate.
