The plot with the Oak of Mamre was bought in 1868 by the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin); the first liturgy was served here in 1871 and a stone pilgrims’ house was built in 1874. The Church of the Holy Forefathers was built in 1914 and consecrated on 31 May 1925 by Patriarch Damian of Jerusalem. From the 1920s the site was under the Russian Church Abroad, and since 5 July 1997 under the Moscow Patriarchate.
