The plot on the summit of the Mount of Olives was acquired in 1870 by Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin), head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission; excavations there uncovered ancient mosaics and tombs. A women's community was formed in 1906 and became a convent in 1924.
