The plot in Ein Karem, 7 km south-west of the Old City of Jerusalem, was bought by the head of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin); most sources date the purchase to 1871. The first church, of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, was built in 1880–1881 and consecrated in 1883. The cathedral founded in 1910 was completed after 1997 and consecrated in 2007 in honour of All Saints of Russia. Since 1948 the convent has been under the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission of the Moscow Patriarchate.
