The plot on the northern outskirts of Tehran was bought by the parish organising commission on 6 February 1941 for 210,000 rials; funds for construction were raised by the Russian residents of the city. The cathedral, designed by architect Nikolai Markov, was founded on 21 August 1944 and consecrated on 9 April 1945; it houses the iconostasis of the former St. Alexander Nevsky embassy church. A two-storey parish house was built at the same time. The parish originally belonged to the Russian Church Abroad and since the mid-1990s to the Moscow Patriarchate.
