The tent-roofed memorial church commemorates some 22,000 Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Nations in 1813. Vladimir Pokrovsky's design was adapted and carried out by the Leipzig architects Weidenbach and Tschammer; the foundation stone was laid on 28 December 1912 and the church was consecrated on 17 October 1913, the centenary of the battle.
