The plot on Caucade hill on the western outskirts of Nice was acquired in 1866 by the Russian consulate and the Church of St Nicholas and St Alexandra, which was under the Holy Synod; the cemetery opened in 1867, with the chapel of St Nicholas at its centre. It is the second largest Russian cemetery in France, with more than 3,000 burials. From the 1920s the cemetery was managed by the Russian Orthodox Religious Association of Nice (ACOR). In 2021 a court of first instance recognised the association's title, but in April 2025 the Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence recognised the Russian Federation as the owner.
