1857Public buildings
An 18th-century former hospital building in the old harbour of Villefranche, handed over by the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1857 for use by the Russian navy as a coal depot and supply base. In the 1880s Kiev University professor Alexei Korotnev set up a zoological station in the 'Russian House', funded by Russian subsidies until 1917. In 1931 the laboratory was taken over by the French Ministry of National Education; today it is Sorbonne University's Institut de la Mer de Villefranche.
