The chapel at the entrance to the Contrexéville spa park was built in 1909 by Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna in memory of her husband, Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich; she had been a regular visitor to the spa since 1902. Maria Pavlovna returned to Contrexéville in July 1920, died there on 5 September 1920 and is buried in the chapel. The chapel is opened during guided tours by the tourist office and for services; it is looked after by the Association of Friends of the Russian Orthodox Chapel of Contrexéville.
