A Neo-Baroque building at Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 13, built for the Alexander Gymnasium, a Russian boys' school founded in 1870; the Grand Duchy of Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. The school obtained the plot in Etu-Töölö after a petition by its headmaster V. V. Belevich in 1908; the plans and facade were drawn up by the St Petersburg architect Lev Shishko, the works were supervised by Mikhail Chaiko, and the building was inaugurated on 28 December 1913 and dedicated to Emperor Alexander II. The school worked here for about four years; from January 1919 the building housed Finland's first cadet school. In 1923 the University of Helsinki bought the block from the state and installed its zoological collections here.
