Coastal fortifications erected in 1914–1916 on the island of Utö at the entrance to the Archipelago Sea to protect the sea route to Petrograd; Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. Temporary positions were later replaced by stone and concrete casemates and gun emplacements; a cobbled road and a narrow-gauge railway were laid across the island, a pier about a hundred metres long was built in the harbour, and a barracks, a wash-house and an ammunition store in the village. After 1917 the works were used by the Finnish coastal defence. The garrison was disbanded at the turn of 2005 and 2006 and the buildings passed out of state ownership.
