The brick church was built in 1913–1915 as the Orthodox church of the Russian garrison of Kouvola and consecrated on 6 January 1916 (24 December 1915 Old Style); Finland was then a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. From 1918 the building was used by the Lutheran and military congregations; on 3 May 1919 it was consecrated as a Lutheran church and served as the main church of the Kouvola Lutheran parish until 1978. In 1981 the Lutheran parish donated the building to the Hamina Orthodox parish and it became an Orthodox church again.
