The Orthodox church, one of Tampere's landmarks, was built in 1896–1899 to a design by the military engineer T. U. Yazykov; at that time Finland was part of the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland. Today it is the main church of the Tampere Orthodox parish of the Orthodox Church of Finland. In July 2026 lightning struck the dome of the bell tower, after which the cross was taken down and the building was temporarily closed to visitors.
