The wooden Orthodox church was built in 1886–1887 to drawings by the diocesan architect G. I. Karpov. The project was driven by Joensuu merchants and Orthodox farmers of the surrounding area, and the Holy Synod in St Petersburg supported it with a substantial donation. Joensuu was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. Together with the Lutheran church it is listed among the nationally significant built cultural environments of Finland (RKY) and is the main church of the Joensuu Orthodox parish.
The website of the Joensuu Orthodox parish, which names the church as its main sanctuary, carries notices and the schedule for September–October 2026.
