The stone church was the main church of the fortress town of Ruotsinsalmi (Rochensalm), completed in 1801; its design and construction were handled by the naval authorities, with the Admiralty architect Yakov Perrin as designer and the architect Miller finishing the work. The Finnish Heritage Agency describes it as the most notable example of Russian neoclassicism in the country and the only surviving building of the fortress town. At the time of construction the territory was part of the Russian Empire. Today the church belongs to the Orthodox Parish of South-Eastern Finland.
